I posted this version of the song awhile back but now the Sound Cloud link is dead so I decided to repost this because this song more specifically this version of this song has snuck it’s way back into my life. Below is the original text of my old post:
Nothing compares to live versions of this song. Towards the end of this version, when the instruments start to die down and she sings her “oooh” call and response with the rest of the band, you can hear Régine’s voice hitch as she takes a sharp intake of breath in the microphone as she tries to hold back from crying. You can just hear the complete pain and passion in her voice that doesn’t resonate as powerfully over the studio version (though that one is of course still beautiful). If anything, this song and this version is what I recommend everyone listens to. This is what music is about, how a metaphor in a song about an extremely personal moment (like losing her mother) can resonate with so many people and touch on a feeling that we all are familiar with. The reality of growing up and the isolation that sometimes follows, or as the songs puts it, crashing towards the driver’s seat, some people sooner and more forcefully than others. God, I love this song.
